I feel thankful everyday to be just one amongst countless people--of our ancient global past, embodied present and mysterious future--who get to make space for expressions of Her love for all of Creation.
She--the Sacred Feminine--is one, many and real. I have come to experience Her in Source, Creatrix, Sophia, Shekinah, Starcestors and Starlings, Earthcestors and Earthlings, Black Madonna, Mother Mary+Jesus Christ++Ruah (Holy Spirit), Mahashakti (Durga Ma, Saraswati, Lalita Tripura Sundari, Bhuvaneshwari, Kali, Parvati, Lakshmi, Sita, and in time, I trust, more), Quan Yin, Osun, Namakaoka'ahi/Yemaya, all Holy Mothers and Grandmothers, Mama Earth, my Ancestors of many streams, Mary Magdalene and Miriam.
But more important than all of this, who is She, or who/what is Sacred in your life and context, and how do you recognize their presence?
My greatest teachers have been:
Socially and spiritually rooted artists. Children who've suffered and strived to survive immense abuse and institutionalization. Young and old who've faced HIV/AIDS, other life-threatening illness and loss. Black, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, PoC and Trans/Nonbinary beloveds. Friends and family living with disabilities. Faith-grounded activists and organizers. Asian Camp and friends in the United Methodist Church. Crenshaw. My family on both sides of the veil. Bidden and unbidden teachers through whom She's called me into encounter, relationship and offering.
I'm a queer cis woman of Okinawan (Ryukyuan) and Japanese descent, formed on the lands of both the Gabrielino Tongva and Muwekma Ohlone peoples (LA and SF Bay Area). My ancestors loved and labored, enabling me to earn an MSW, MFA and MDiv, and to become a certified leader of InterPlay(c) and Poetry as a Tool for Wellness. I'm a member of Spiritual Directors International and a practitioner of The Art of Ensoulment of The Hidden Monastery.
I feel drawn to Her divine bodyspirit in and around living creatures (mysteriously deep affection for mammals), justice and harmony, Mama Ocean and Redwood, the Ancestors, the body, dancing and writing. One place where these come together for me is in my Substack, She Is Here: A Body Memoir.
